Middle School Update!
Massed Band Festival 2009
On March 16th we have the privilege to travel to Adna Middle/High School to participate in the 2009 Middle School Massed Band Festival. The students will be performing one piece of music and then joining in with fourteen other middle school bands to perform four more pieces. We will depart from the school following lunch on the 19th. Once we arrive in Adna, there will be rehearsal during the day (from 2-5pm), followed by a short dinner break and changing time, with the concert occurring from 7-830pm. Following the concert we will pack up and return to the middle school around 930pm. This is an amazing opportunity for the student to be able to perform for other students their age as well as perform WITH students from other schools. As far as I know, there is nothing else like this in the state. We are looking for a few chaperones, if you are available to help, please contact Mr. Bowerly @ bowerlya@tenino.k12.wa.us.
Winter Band Concert
On Thursday March 19th, the Concert and Symphonic Bands will be presenting their winter concert numbers. The symphonic band will be performing many of the pieces from Massed Band Festival and the Concert band will be presenting several pieces themselves. Also performing are any students that participated in the regional solo/ensemble contest in February.
B and Shirts
Band Shirt orders are now being taken so that we will have them in time for Massed Band Festival. They are TEN DOLLARS and please make cash/checks payable to Tenino Middle School. The shirts will help promote unity in the band and will help them look good when we travel.
Practice Sheets
As the year goes on I just like to remind all parents about expectations. Your student(s) should be practicing at home every week. The expectation is for two hours a week. That’s a mere 17 minutes a day! Please make sure to remind them to bring their instruments home/get them out of the case. Those practice sheets are due EVERY TUESDAY.

Maowad Jazz Festival (Central Washington University)
The kids did an awesome job at the Jazz Festival this weekend in Ellensburg. It was our first festival of the year and a great learning experience. That is the aim for the Maowad Jazz Festival. The jazz students were exposed to jazz bands from all over the state, jazz choirs (for the first time for many of them) they learned about jazz articulations, SCATTING, and we had a great time riding over in the suburbans (special thanks to my drivers again!)
Our next jazz festival is March 21st at Newport High School in Bellevue. It will be competitive and the kids should be ready to go!
Way to go Jazz Band!!!
