Tenino Solo/Ensemble Contest Info
Feb. 4, 2012
Rochester Middle School
Solo and Ensemble Contest is an opportunity for students to prepare a piece of literature for performance for a specialist in their instrument area. Performing a solo or in a small group exponentially aids in the musical development of your student.
The SWWMEA regional solo/ensemble contest is this Saturday February 4th at Rochester Middle School. Students will be put into a performance time slot from 8am-4pm on this day.
Students performing at SOLO the cost is $10.00, Students performing an ENSEMBLE the cost is $15.00 (whole group combined) this must be paid to the Office (Ms. Blair at the High School or Ms. Landers at the Middle School) by January 6th (and receipt turned into Mr. Bowerly).
Schedules will not be released until two weeks before the event. Your student will perform between 8am and 4pm. You should show up to Rochester Middle School AT LEAST 30 minutes before your performance time. Warm up in one of the warm up rooms, arrive at your performance room 10 minutes early, and be ready to perform during your time slot. Mr. Bowerly may not be there before you perform as he will be running around trying to get to everyone’s performances.
Students should be dress appropriately for their performance. Concert attire is the best option, but dressing formally or nice is also acceptable.
Once again thank you for supporting your child and their adventure in music education!

Break
Make sure you get out your horn and practice over break. Not playing an instrument for two weeks will cause your embouchure to get out of shape (much like not working out and what that does to your body). Coming back after break (HS) has a lot of Basketball games (2 hrs of playing) and (MS) is getting ready for solo ensemble and massed band! DONT GET OUT OF SHAPE OVER BREAK!!!

Attendance and Participation:
Participation at all assigned games is necessary in the sound and quality of experience. The expectation is that all members of the pep band are in attendance at all games. There are 8 games that we are performing for (6 nights). The season is worth 800 points: 8 games at 100 points each (200 for each double-header) for showing up in uniform and on time. You will get points for all games you attend. If you attend partial games, you will receive partial credit.
Uniform:
The uniform for all games is the OFFICIAL TENINO BAND TSHIRT with our warm up pants. If you do not show up in proper attire, it will not count as an attended game. We maintain the tradition of uniformity and quality in ALL PERFORMANCES. There will be a few select “SPIRIT” performances where exceptions will be made, but the uniform is still standard. If we travel the complete uniform will be required for all travel
Music:
Standard pep band literature from the Marching Band Season (football) and additional tunes that are added specifically for basketball band will be the foundation of music played during the season. You are expected to have your flip folder; complete with music and lyre, at every game you are playing at.
Playoffs/Districts/State:
In the case that the basketball team does make the playoffs, pep band DOES travel to all games. Participation selection will be based on participation throughout the season in order to fill instrumentation. No one is guaranteed a spot on playoff trips. Dates and locations are also not known until very last minute, so understanding that and being flexible is very important.

Congrats to our HS Fall Concert Banditos!

Letter to Parent: The Reason for No Competitive Marching Band
The following is a letter I wrote to a parent about the reasons we are not having a competitive marching band in Tenino. There are still more reasons why, but these are the big ones.
Dear Parent.
I'm sorry. I explained in class the next day about the circumstances and assumed that that information got home, as the original information made it home before I had the chance to explain it to the students.
Basically, there was supposed to be 2 different types of marching band "competitive" marching band (which met in the evening and was at every rehearsal, and worked like a sport) and Normal Marching Band which performed at football games, parades, husky band day, that included all students in the band class during the normal day. Many of the students never understood the difference in these two even though it was explained at the end of last year, and multiple times this year so far.
What happened was that "competitive" marching band was not well attended at all, less than 25% of the band was participating, the first rehearsal only 9 kids showed up. The next week it was 16, the following week it was 12. Students didnt understand the dedication that was needed to be in a competitive group, or they didnt demonstrate it. As we came to the end of the first month, we were already so deep in a hole we would have never gotten to a point where we were "competitive". So the drum major and myself decided for a different plan, and that it wasnt something that would really fit in this community.
The second factor is cost. The past 3 years I have paid for everything concerning "marching" shows. Paying for arrangers, writing the shows myself, arranging the music myself, paying my friends to come down and work with kids, spending many many hours researching and developing our shows. All by myself. Other schools have 4-16 staff members, paid by the district or boosters, that help out with marching. Other schools the boosters pay the 500-1500 dollars it costs to have competitive show music written, drill, and all other factors of the show taken care of. We do not have that here, and I personally cannot afford to continue to support the marching by myself.
Other bands have "band" fees for marching season where each students pays a certain amount to do marching band, which covers most of the fees, but I feel like that would be an unneeded burden on the parents of students, as we already deal with monetary issues with the small amount of stuff we already do.
Tenino will continue to get marching experience, we know how to put a band on the field, march in parades, and other elements of marching that make it worthwhile to have it as a part of the HS curriculum. We are still doing a show this year, for our marching festival and for auburn, we will just use purely class time so that everyone can participate rather than having evening rehearsals where less than half of the band shows up. Our band is bigger than ever, as you can tell from our football performances and how packed we are in the corner of the stadium. The idea is to make it easier for the kids to participate and I feel like not doing a competitive show is probably the easiest way to us to attain that success.
We have new "non-competitive" uniforms that I think are going to be pretty cool now, and we are getting more and more musical with each day of rehearsal, and I think that the experience will be different, but still a quality experience and product for those involved.
Thanks for your concern

2011 Band Uniform Information!
2011 Band Uniform
In the 2011 year the band is going a new direction with their uniforms. To help promote unity in look and sound each member of the band will purchase, or be responsible for fundraising, for their own uniform. This will include warm ups, baseball hat, band polo shirt and a band t-shirt. These uniforms will be worn at all of our public performances and whenever we travel. Students will be responsible for maintaining their own uniform and making sure they are in the proper attire at each event we are performing at.
40.00 - Trainer Warm Ups*
15.00 - Solid Brushed Twill Hat*
30.00 - Sport Performance Polo*
FREE - Band T-Shirt (FREE with Warm Up Purchase)*
30.00 – Sideline Duffel Bag (optional)
*required
The concert attire for the Tenino District Bands will also change to “Concert Black” which is defined as “black formal attire”. Black dresses, black slacks, black dress shirt, black shoes, black socks, black suits, black ties. Black is the color of objects that do not emit or reflect light. This will help with our uniformity and make sure we have clothes that fit for everyone.
A reminder: These purchases will be used by your student throughout their time in the Tenino Bands, and they will be responsible for maintaining it as well.

Clark College Jazz Festival Trip CANCELLED
it is with great frustration that I have to cancel our jazz festival trip for tomorrow.
The administration on the school district has put an emphasis on finals this year and no students are allowed to leave the building. Thank you to those who volunteered to chaperone, hopefully we can get you on board again in the future.
Our next jazz festival in March 19th at Kamiak High School in Mukilteo. It features the Jim Cutler Big Band (not Tenino's Jim Cutler) in addition to the other performing groups.
Thank you for supporting your child's jazz education.

JAZZ Festival
On Friday January 28th the jazz band is heading to Vancouver, WA for the clark college jazz festival.
Their performance time is 840am. @ noon we find out if we made finals.
Finals performance is at 7pm. Awards ceremony is at 9pm.
We are looking for a driver to help get us down to vancouver. The district transportation situation is always in question, so we are not sure if we have two suburbans or not. If you have a large van/suburban/suv it would be a great help if you can drive!
THANKS!
